Disabled Angler Facilities

Fishing for wild brown trout is no longer confined to the fit and able-bodied. Assynt boasts a facility that is unique to Scotland, possibly to the UK.
A few miles east of Lochinver lies an All-Abilities Footpath which leads to two lochs, Loch Leitir Easaidh and Loch na h-fraioch, each of which is equipped with a jetty and specially converted boats.
These are not tucked away in dark little corners - they are in the middle of pristine wild land with magnificent views of the landmark mountain Quinag. As the estate has been deer-fenced for many years, the vegetation, and therefore the wildlife, is diverse and lush.
The facility was opened in 2006, financed by a number of separate funding bodies under the coordination of the Culag Community Woodland Trust, who bought the land - the Little Assynt Estate - for the community in 2000. The lochs and boats are open to anybody but disabled people get priority for use of the boats.
Those wishing to use this facility should in the first instance contact Peter Hendrich on 01571 844076 or by email to arrange for keys to the boats and provision of engines.
